While players will begin encountering familiar locations after just a few runs, The Last Stand has an impressive amount of maps to cycle through. Aftermath has balanced the risk and reward of each playstyle exceptionally well - the only thing missing is an ‘execute zombie’ move to use on unaware foes, which is notable in its absence. The stealth options are fab, but there is a heavy cost to them - at every moment the player’s infection is spreading, and sneaking around takes much longer than going in guns blazing. They can throw items to distract, crouch behind cars or furniture while zombies shamble past, and use the cover of darkness to sneak into locations unnoticed. Faced with degrading melee weapons and limited ammo, players are encouraged to use every trick in the book to avoid the attention of their foes. The Last Stand keeps its roguelike formula compelling by offering some great zombie-fighting gameplay. It’s a great way to constantly mix things up and ensure that the player is constantly experiencing new challenges. The player is always able to choose from a selection of three possible mutations, and new ones are added as milestones are hit. These perks can range from a camouflaging smell that makes it harder for zombies to detect the player, to suddenly-musclebound arms that crush zombies while slowing movement speed. Every time a segment becomes fully corrupted, the player receives a mutation - basically, a perk that compensates for the fact that they’ve just lost a big chunk of their maximum health. The volunteer’s health bar is broken up into segments, and their infection gradually consumes one segment at a time. This zombie virus is a central mechanic in The Last Stand. They then mark the cache they’ve collected so that it can be recovered by uninfected humans after the deteriorating volunteer has either succumbed to the virus or been torn to pieces. They’re given a car, bare minimum equipment, and told to go out and locate as many supplies as they can. The zombie apocalypse is a perfect thematic setting for a roguelite - what better way to feature scrappy survivors constantly scrounging for equipment, renewing hordes of enemies at every turn, and the risk of familiar, safe locations becoming sinister deathtraps? The Last Stand: Aftermath incorporates all of these things and then does one better - it narratively justifies the endless series of heroes common to rogues by positioning each one as an already-infected survivor who’s volunteering to go into the undead wasteland on a one-way trip.Īn isometric twin-stick shooter based around survival and crafting, The Last Stand: Aftermath has the player controlling a series of exiles - they’re human survivors who’ve been infected with the zombie virus, and are just days away from turning into flesh-hungry ghouls. Still, it wasn’t enough, so Guddu, the oldest at ten, went to work, washing dishes for 6 hours for half a rupee. Here, the end of the queue, the tail, becomes the first of the queue, that is, the head. This is a type of queue which is circular in shape. Queue stores the elements according to their priorities ( 1 -> 5 -> 10 ), not by the order of element creation/insertion(10 -> 1 -> 5), as shown in the above output. After that, a while loop retrieves or dequeues the elements using the get() method. Elements are inserted into this queue using the put() method. This is the basic example of implementing a priority queue using a queue. Max heap: A complete binary tree where the key at the root must be maximum among all the keys present in the Binary heap. Python uses a binary heap to implement priority queues. Python provides a built-in implementation of the priority queue data structure. This is an example of priority queues using the queue.PriorityQueue class. It can be clearly depicted in the output that the order in which the elements are entered (5 -> 1 -> 10) is different from the dequeuing order (1 -> 5 -> 10). While loop is then used to pop elements out of the list. Using the heappush() method of the heapq module, we have inserted the elements into the list. A binary heap is often used to implement priority queues. This is an example of priority queues using the heapq module. Therefore, sorted lists are suitable only when there are few insertions. The main drawback is that inserting a new element into the list is a slow operation. Pros and Cons of this Approach: It is best to identify and delete the smallest or largest element quickly. This is a manual method of implementing priority queues. While the loop is used to retrieve elements from the list using the pop() method. The list is then sorted in ascending order. #list is sorted evertime a new element is insertedĮxplanation: First, we have declared an empty list into which elements are inserted using the append() method of the List class. This is an example of priority queues using a Python sorted list.Ĭode: #Implementing Priority Queues with Sorted list Here are some of the examples of priority queues in Python, which are as follows: Example #1 Priority queues are also used in Process Scheduling, where a high-priority task is assigned to the CPU before a low-priority task. Operating System: It is also used in the OS for load balancing and Interrupt handling. The priority queue keeps track of unexplored routes the one with a lower bound on the total length is the smallest and is given the highest priority. A movie in the same vein as The House on the Edge of the Park and The Last House on the Left. Both fiction and real life have massive battles between enormous armies consisting of thousands of soldiers. A movie he was so obsessed with that he made it twice. Funny Games by Michael Haneke should probably be mentioned as well.I'd say it's Deodato's best movie, and David Hess and Giovanni Lombardo Radice both do excellent and very believeable roles as sadistic psychopaths. I wouldn't call it exactly THAT violent, but it has a very suffocating atmosphere and some pretty disturbing scenes. Said to be inspired by Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left. The House on the Edge of the Park is another Ruggero Deodato movie. But once again, it's not torture porn and is really thought provoking. Ichi is over the top and silly, Audition is the darkest kind of humor and seriously twisted. People always mention Ichi The Killer when talking about violence and Japanese movies, but I think Audition is both Miike's best movie and has much more stomach turning violence than Ichi. Inside / À l'intérieur is an interesting, violent and fucked up movie that also has a good plot.I do have some suggestions that I haven't seen mentioned here yet: But I'd say many Hollywood -movies are much closer to torture porn, even though they have less gory scenes. I haven't seen A Serbian Film, so can't say anything about that. Hard to say how much I suggest watching the movie, but it's definitely not just torture porn.Īlso, Human Centipede, Salo and Antichrist are all fucked up to their own extents, but none of them is torture porn either. Though the movie otherwise is an excellent and thought provoking piece, it could've probably done without at least that animal cruelty scene. No other movie I've seen even comes close to that. I can't forget that absolutely horrifying desperation. And it's not the gore, not even the turtle scene or the butchering of the pig - at least they were dead by the time they cut them up - but the scene where they stick a knife in the neck of that poor swamp rat or raccoon or whatever it is. Personally, the only movie that has ever had me close to throwing up is the aforementioned Cannibal Holocaust. Those are a bit rarer, but some come to mind.Īnd finally, there's the absolutely stomach turning violence and sickness, which is basically made to look like snuff. Then there's that unique, sick and uncomfortable kind of blend that makes you grind your teeth - like Irreversible. If you talk about ultra violence, like Tarantino's stuff, there's plenty of that too. If you think about the splatter kind that takes it over the top, there's dozens and dozens of those (like Peter Jackson's original work). I guess it all depends on what kind of violence we're talking about. So I’ve been wondering, all of you sick fucks and depraved psychopaths, what are some of the most graphically violent movies out there? They don’t even have to be as graphic as those, it could even be more mainstream Hollywood stuff like Saw, Hostel, Kill Bill etc. So I’ve obviously never checked out or bothered with some really messed up stuff I heard about films like the Human Centipedes, Salo, Antichrist, Cannibal Holocaust, Martyrs, and A Serbian Film. I didn’t see the Saw movies yet or any of the movies in the Hostel franchise because I’m just not into that torture porn shit, just for the sake of torture porn and gratification. Irreversible had two disturbing scenes where, I’m not going to spoil it. But for straight up horror movies, the Final Destination movies have some gory deaths, Mother and Hereditary had a couple of graphic disturbing scenes too. Casino and Goodfellas also had some violent scenes as well, along with American History X. I watched films like Pulp Fiction, Scarface, The Hateful Eight, Inglourious Basterds, The Passion of the Christ, Natural Born Killers, Green Room, Rambo IV, and Bone Tomahawk. This process involves the projection of one’s personal assumptions that are based on experience, knowledge, and beliefs. Historians are people who use different sources, modalities, fragments of old writings, and many other tools to try and piece together what happened hundreds of years ago. The first situation concerns the historians’ bias. When experts talk about bias in history they refer to the absence of objectivity that stems from two different situations. How to Explain Historical Bias?įor kids to understand the complexity behind the “Columbus Day vs Indigenous Peoples Day” argument, they must understand the notion of historical bias. Hopefully, in this article, we’ll get to a conclusion on which approach is most appropriate for teaching kids about Columbus Day vs Indigenous Peoples Day. As a teacher, you must be aware that there’s a lot of nuance to this issue and you have a variety of ways to teach this topic. With Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day just around the corner, you have the perfect opportunity to introduce kids to historical bias. This allows us to approach history and its implications much more objectively.īut, how do we find a good balance between different historical accounts and respectfully teach kids about this complex phenomenon that even world-wide respected historians have contradictory viewpoints on? It helps us sift through the predominant ideas and beliefs that have shaped mainstream history through looking at the context and the nuance that every historical topic is loaded with. It’s a valid argument that led to the notion of “historical bias”, a concept that has become as important as history itself. History is written by the victors, said Winston Churchill, presumably, and since then, these words have become the go-to premise for anyone criticizing the way history is being told.
